How Anna University calculates GPA

Each course gives a grade, and each grade carries points. Multiply each course's credits by its grade points, add them up, and divide by the total credits of the courses you passed:

GPA = Σ (credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits

CGPA is the same sum taken over every course from the first semester on. A course with a U grade is left out of both the top and the bottom of the sum until you clear it.

Grade points, Regulation 2021

GradeGrade points
O (Outstanding)10
A+ (Excellent)9
A (Very Good)8
B+ (Good)7
B (Average)6
C (Satisfactory)5
U (Re-appearance)0
SA (Shortage of Attendance)0
WD (Withdrawal)0

Theory grades are awarded by relative grading, so Anna University does not fix a mark range for each grade. O, A+, A, B+, B and C are passes; U means the course has to be written again.

Passing a course

You pass when you get at least 50 out of 100 in total (internal + end semester), with at least 45% in the end semester exam. The pass mark calculator works out the end semester mark you need from your internals.

CGPA, percentage and class

On the consolidated grade sheet, percentage of marks = CGPA × 10. A CGPA of 8.50 or more gets First Class with Distinction (if every course was passed at the first attempt within the normal period), 6.50 or more gets First Class, and anything below is Second Class. See CGPA to percentage.
